Al-Samaqa and Tree Street
Dura's most beautiful, lively and vibrant face, Al-Samaqa is the gateway that welcomes visitors to the city with a green face and a heart full of life. It takes its name from its fertile, sumac-colored soil (sumac being a wild plant well known in Dura, from which the sumac spice is made) and from the height and loftiness of its trees, as if the name were born of the land and the trees together, carrying a lasting sign of the area's long farming tradition and abundance. Close to the city's historic center, Al-Samaqa has grown over time into a lively economic and social hub, home to institutions, vital facilities, schools, and government and commercial buildings, as well as Dura International Stadium (Houari Boumediene), which fills the area with movement and life.
In the heart of this area shines Tree Street, known in the past as Farm Street. The road was originally an old stone pavement leading to the agricultural school and its wide fields, before it was restored and developed in the Jordanian era and lined on both sides with leafy trees that soon grew and wove their branches together above the road, turning it into a green passage like a tunnel of shade and breeze. There, the leaves dance with the wind as if playing a hymn to nature, light filters through the branches in threads of gold, and you hear the chirping of birds, so that the street becomes a picture full of life and beauty, where the scent of the earth meets the serenity of the soul.
Tree Street has a unique beauty that recalls the splendor of the historic colonnaded streets of ancient cities, giving visitors the feeling that time slows down out of respect for its beauty. Between the green of the trees and the bustle of markets, cafés and modern facilities, Al-Samaqa appears as an oasis that brings together the authenticity of the land and modern urban life, the memory of the old farm and the pulse of the contemporary city. And so Al-Samaqa and Tree Street remain a green poem at the entrance to Dura, a scene where nature, history and life embrace, telling generations the story of a city that knows how to keep its roots as it reaches toward the future.
