Dura Municipality Discusses Craft Zone with Minister
Dura Mayor Eng. Muhannad Amr and members of the municipal council met with Minister of Industry Eng. Arafat Asfour to discuss the current state of industrial and craft activities in Dura, ways to regulate and develop them, and measures that could contribute to supporting local economic development and improving the investment environment in line with the city’s urban planning requirements.
The meeting addressed a proposal to establish a municipal industrial and craft zone in Dura. The project is considered an important initiative for organizing existing craft and industrial activities and facilities and providing suitable infrastructure and services for tradespeople and craftspeople. This would allow these establishments to operate in a regulated and safe environment while supporting their ability to develop and grow.
The mayor reviewed Dura’s key needs and the challenges facing municipal work amid the current economic conditions. He stressed the importance of establishing the craft zone to address the spread of a number of craft activities and facilities within residential neighborhoods and to relocate activities whose nature is incompatible with residential use to a more suitable environment.
Such a move would contribute to better urban planning within neighborhoods, reduce conflicts between residential and craft uses, improve the urban landscape and the quality of the residential environment, and ensure that planning takes into account public safety, environmental, and urban development requirements while safeguarding the interests of both business owners and citizens.
Amr emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between Dura Municipality, the Ministry of Industry, and relevant stakeholders to complete the necessary studies and requirements for the project and move toward turning it into an implementable initiative. He noted that the project would support craftspeople and industrial establishments, encourage local investment, create employment opportunities, strengthen the contribution of the industrial and craft sectors to the local economy, and improve urban organization within residential neighborhoods and population centers.
For his part, Minister Asfour affirmed the ministry’s readiness to cooperate and coordinate with Dura Municipality and relevant stakeholders to study the requirements for establishing the craft zone and follow up on the necessary procedures to regulate the industrial and craft sectors in the city.
The minister also highlighted the role played by local government bodies in serving citizens and supporting local development, emphasizing the importance of this role in strengthening citizens’ resilience and stimulating the local economy. He expressed the ministry’s readiness to continue coordinating with and supporting the municipality on matters related to regulating and developing industrial and craft activities.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Dura Municipality affirmed that it would continue working and coordinating with the Ministry of Industry and relevant stakeholders to advance the project, given its importance in organizing industrial and craft activities, helping restructure land uses across the city, achieving more harmonious urban planning within residential neighborhoods, and improving the investment environment and the quality of services provided to citizens and business owners.
